This bishop asked Rome whether he should recognise and formally establish this community in his diocese as a traditional Latin Mesto of Pontifical Right, Ex Ecclesia Dei. The Holy See answered him, 'No.' Do not give them recognition. This is the situation."

Bischof Athanasius Schneider erklärte gegenüber LifeSiteNews.com, dass die geplanten Bischofsweihen der FSSPX am 1. Juli auch ohne päpstliche Genehmigung "in keiner Weise" schismatisch seien. Er rechtfertigte diese Position mit dem Hinweis auf den Notstand in der Kirche: Der Novus Ordo wird in 95% der Welt gefeiert und ist zumindest ein doktrinär fragwürdiger Ritus. Hinzu kommt, dass die Wahrheit relativiert wird. Der Vatikan hat mit Amoris Laetitia die Heilige Kommunion für Ehebrecher und mit Fiducia Supplicans die "Segnung" homosexueller Paare genehmigt. Bischof Schneider fügt hinzu, dass unerlaubte Bischofsweihen im Kirchenrecht traditionell nicht als Schisma behandelt und mit einer Suspendierung statt einer Exkommunikation bestraft wurden.
Bischof Schneider fordert: Pius-Bischofsweihen erlauben – Konzilstexte überarbeiten?
„Und dann auch der Satz in Lumen gentium 16, dass wir Katholiken mit den Moslems, mit cum musulmanis in Lateinisch, adoramus, wir beten an den einen Gott. Das kann man so nicht lassen. Das ist so zweideutig, voll von Zweideutigkeiten und das muss sicherlich korrigiert werden.“
Nur ein einziger Einwand in sechs Punkten: 1. Der Scholastiker St. Thomas von Aquin sagt, Gott wolle die Bestrafung des Verbrechers, aber Er wolle auch, dass die Ehefrau ihren verbrecherischen Ehemann vor der Polizei versteckt. Das lässt sich auf die Religionen übertragen: Gott ist Selber das höchste Recht, darum gibt es zwar kein Recht zur Verbreitung des Falschen, aber ein Recht, darin nicht vom Staat behindert zu werden. 2. Die Behinderung der öffentlichen Ausübung und Verbreitung des Irrtums schafft bei den Anhängern der falschen Religion eine Märtyrermentalität. 3. Sollen nach katholischer Lehre Protestanten grundsätzlich vom Staat bestraft werden, wenn sie als Protestanten öffentlich auftreten? 4. In a February interview with Robert Moynihan, Bishop Athanasius Schneider addressed the SSPX and pushed back on Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández’s claim that Vatican II’s texts “cannot be modified.” Vatican II, as stated by Pope John XXIII and Pope Paul VI, was a pastoral council, not dogmatic. He cited the Fourth Lateran Council (1215) as an example of a council containing disciplinary statements the Church would not uphold today. On the SSPX, Schneider proposed bringing them into minimum canonical integration first, then continuing doctrinal dialogue. He warned that harshness risks creating long-term alienation and contrasted the Vatican’s strictness toward the SSPX with what he sees as a more accommodating approach toward China.

Schneider argued that only the Word of God—Scripture—cannot be changed. He said Vatican II was explicitly described by Pope John XXIII as pastoral and catechetical, not dogmatic or definitive. According to Schneider, while dogmas cited from previous councils cannot be changed, pastoral formulations can be clarified, improved, or corrected. Fatalerweise unterwerfen sich auch Christen diesem Narrativ. Und das nicht aus unehrenhaften Motiven. Der Schutz des christlichen Glaubens vor Instrumentalisierung durch Politik ist ein wichtiges Anliegen. Christen wissen, dass ihr Glaube missbraucht werden kann, und dass Fragmente herausgelöst werden können, um politische Ideologien zu legitimieren.
Dagegen aber hilft nicht, christenfeindliche Dummheiten, wie sie der Spiegel aufs Titelbild bringt, zu tolerieren oder die Sprengkraft des christlichen Glaubens durch ängstliche Vorsicht lahmzulegen. Christen sollten sich trauen, einzufordern, das christliche Bekenntnis wieder als Grundlage der westlichen Gesellschaft zu implementieren. Und zwar in seiner Gesamtheit, weder als politische Ideologie noch als opportune diffuse „christliche Werte“.
